THE CAFE
Oak floor, simple wooden furniture and a couple of sofas by the fire provide the background. We have route maps and local information on the wall, and papers and magazines are supplied. (We also have wireless broadband if you need to check email.)The food is all home cooked using seasonal and local ingredients where possible. Our coffee is fair trade "Puro" beans from Latin America and we are proud to be told it is the best in the area.
A typical menu would include soups, crusty bread, meaty stews, fresh salads with herbs from the garden. In summer the emphasis is on snacks and salads, but if it is cold outside, we try to have some warming casseroles or pies on the specials menu.
If you have any room for pudding, baked vanilla rice pud, or rich chocolate cake with cream should keep you satisfied. There is always a vegetarian option, and we can accommodate gluten free diets. We have local and continental bottled beer, a selection of organic wines by the glass or bottle, and Brecon's very own "Penderyn"whisky.
We are proud of our organic cakes, all made here from the best ingredients. Our dark chocolate gluten free cake contains five large bars of Green and Black's best fair-trade choc. The apple, cinnamon and walnut is a best seller, closely followed by carrot and banana, and lemon and almond polenta cake. There are normally two gluten free options, and some are non dairy.
Our salads are generous and feature lovely oak-leaf lettuce, rocket, toasted sunflower seeds, home-made coleslaw, Aga-roasted red peppers, baby potatoes, garden herbs, and calamata olives. Add your choice of hummous, egg, ham, and organic walnut bread from Caroline's bakery for a healthy and nutritous lunch.
