WHAT TO DO IN THE BEACONS

We are in one of the best areas for mountain biking and hill walking in the south of the UK. We have several hundred kms of routes from the door, into the Beacons, including the famous "gap" route listed as one of the top 10 rides in UK by MBR magazine. There is also Sarn Helen, an old stony Roman road, and the start or finish of the Taff Trail, 50 miles from Cardiff. You can also continue on the Lon Las Cymru, the trans Wales Sustrans cycle route, through the Cambrians and on to Snowdonia.

You can explore the Brecon Beacons, the Black Mountains, and Fforest Fawr all within 10 miles or so. If you have more time you can reach the Cambrian Mountains in about 40 minutes drive, for some of the least explored parts of Wales. We can advise on the routes, the best picnic spots, and the suitability depending on the weather.

Fishing is also an option, and guests have caught good sized trout in the Usk within 300m of the cafe.

It is not just a summer destination, as a lot of the hill trails are stony and well-drained. Autumn can be lovely, with misty valleys, woods full of mushrooms, and colourful foliage. Winter can be great if we get a high pressure weather system, as the Beacons often get cloaked in snow, and look spectacular- better for walking rather than biking though. We don't really recommend December and January as the days are short, and the chance of rain high. However February and March, if snowy can be excellent. If you join our mailing list we can give you a few days notice of snow on the hills.
